Boris Vallejo was born on January 8, 1941 in Lima, Peru. He emigrated to the United States in 1964 and he currently resides in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He frequently works with Julie Bell, his wife and model and a painter in her own right. Vallejo works almost exclusively in the fantasy and erotica genres. His hyper-representational paintings have graced the covers of dozens of science fiction paperbacks and are featured in a series of best-selling glossy calendars. Subjects of his paintings are typically gods, monsters and well-muscled male and female barbarians engaged in battle. Some of his male figures were modeled by Vallejo himself, and many of his later female characters were modeled by his wife. His latest works still retain heavy fantasy elements, but lean more towards the erotic rather than pure fantasy themes.

As far as is known Vallejo never made any art for any Pern book cover. However, the Italian publisher of an edition of Dragonsinger used a piece of existing Vallejo art for the cover of the book. Here again we have a piece of art that seems to have nothing to do with the book or its contents, which is not surprising since it was chosen from existing work. On top of that the publisher had the art edited. I don't know if Boris himself was or is happy with all this...

The original of this painting is titles "Amazon's Pet", an 18"x24" oil painting done in 1977 (with thanks to my friend Linda Eicher).
